Through Four Hundred Years

“Integrity is the seed for achievement. It is the principle that never fails.” – Earl Nightingale

Integrity is a virtue often neglected by many. In both individuals and institutions, it is often overlooked. But what they fail to realize, is that it is something essential, and every one of us should value it and set it as one of our principles in life.
The Pontifical and Royal University of Santo Tomas was established in 1611, more than four centuries ago. The university has gone through a lot of events since it was built. It stood strong under the country’s colonization by Spain and survived the rule of the Americans. And even after being destroyed by the Japanese in 1944, it was rebuilt and continued to educate its Thomasians.
Throughout its history, UST managed to produce successful alumni, excelling in every field, in every time period. Its years did not make its quality education falter, but instead, had improved its quality. And the secret behind this? Integrity.

UST values integrity. It remains true to its word and stays rooted in its core values. It is consistent with its decisions and its choices for the improvement of the campus and its learners. It is an “integer” – whole and intact. Thomasians have been successful all throughout because their minds and bodies work together, guided by the principles of compassion, competence, and commitment, that can never be separated from one another. We have been taught to be compassionate without sacrificing competence and commitment; to be competent without losing compassion for others and the commitment to finish something; and to be committed to being compassionate and competent.
In this ever-changing world, we excel because we have integrity. We have planted its seed in our hearts, and we let our principles guide us in every situation that we face, and it what made us thrive, even after four hundred years.
