Yes, Sir!

As a Filipino, one of my main medium of transportation along with many more fellow commuters in the Philippines, is the ever so popular "jeepney". Now a bona fide jeepney rider like me knows that when the jeepney driver asks "May bababa ba dito? (Is this anybody's stop?)", one would just usually say "Para! (Stop!)". However, in one sunny afternoon on a jeepney ride on the way home, this usual exchange did not unfold. No, instead when the driver asked if anybody wanted to be dropped at the next stop ahead, the man next to me yelled out a clear "Yes, Sir!"

Although the man only uttered 2 words, his reply was enough to surprise and start my questioning of life and our mundane decisions. It really got me thinking that perhaps he has to be one of the most obedient person in the whole universe that 80% of the words that flows out from his mouth was "Yes, Sir!" that he couldn't help not saying it in the jeep. And well, maybe he was just getting home from work and couldn't get the work system off his mind yet in which he always says "Yes, Sir!" to his boss but we'll never know.

Nonetheless, it really got me asking how much an average person says "yes" to anything that it just becomes natural to us. However, even if a task given to us is easy or we have all the time in the world to do it, we still choose to stray from the path of obedience and lead ourselves to procrastinating and declining tasks.

It's quite a disheartening moment to get rejected when requesting help from someone you know that's why we should strive to be a more helpful citizen, always ready to obey requests of those truly in need of our services after careful discernment. We've gotten to used to saying "no" to things out of our comfort zone but we have to for it is in letting go do we truly learn to live and grow. So, it's time to turn that "no" into a "yes" and strive more to be like the man in the jeep with his loud "Yes sir!"
